Dentures are artificial teeth used to replace some or all of the missing teeth in patients who have lost them either partially or entirely. These are removable appliances that can derive support either from the entire palate or from the remaining teeth in the mouth. Full dentures, which rest on the palate as a whole, create a vacuum. In some cases, special denture adhesives can also be used.
What are Dentures Made of? What is Their Composition?
The primary material used in dentures is acrylic resin. White acrylic is used to mimic the teeth and gum tissue, while pink acrylic is utilized for the gums. Depending on the size and location of the gaps, some areas may benefit from metal supports. In full dentures, a horseshoe-shaped metal provides strength to the prosthesis as a whole. Partial dentures may contain metal components in areas where support is needed and pressure is exerted.
Dentures are among the least expensive but least comfortable options for tooth replacement in dental treatments. Dentists typically recommend them for patients who cannot afford implants or do not have significant bone loss preventing implant placement. It’s a rather traditional treatment method. Dentures are suitable for patients who cannot have implants or are seeking an economical solution, particularly those with bone and soft tissue loss.
Advantages and Disadvantages of Dentures
Advantages: Dentures are an economical treatment option. In elderly patients or those with significant soft tissue loss, they provide better aesthetics by giving fullness to the lips and making the patient appear younger. They are easy to clean and can be removed, cleaned, and reinserted as desired. Additionally, acrylic resin, being aesthetically similar to real teeth, provides a natural appearance. It offers a natural look, resembling the realism of acrylic after E-Max. Dentures are lighter than fixed prostheses made of porcelain or zirconia.
Disadvantages: Dentures can be uncomfortable. Eating hard materials like apples can be challenging with dentures. They may move or become loose. Acrylic is more prone to breakage compared to other materials. It is likely that you will need to remove them every night. Full dentures rely on suction from the palate, which can affect taste perception.

Why Does My Denture Hurt My Gums?
Because your denture and gums do not fit properly. Over time, dentures lose their fit in the mouth due to changes in the level of the gum tissue, causing increased pressure on certain areas and resulting in pain for the patient.
Maintenance of Dentures
Dentures are made of a type of plastic called acrylic. Due to their structure, staining and trapping of oral fluids over time are quite normal. Therefore, they should be removed, cleaned, and soaked in water every night before going to bed. It’s advisable to use denture cleaning tablets in the water. Please avoid using chemicals like bleach or detergent as they can damage the acrylic and render it unusable. You should not bite on very hard materials with your dentures. Dentures should be relined once or twice a year as the bone and soft tissue in the mouth change over time. Failure to reline them can lead to sores in the mouth.
Lifespan of Dentures
The average lifespan of dentures is 5 years. Well-maintained dentures can last longer, but discoloration is highly likely over time. At Dental Wise Turkey, we believe it is important to replace dentures every 5 years for oral hygiene reasons. The most important factors affecting the lifespan of dentures are smoking, and consumption of tea and coffee. Heavy consumers of these products are more likely to experience discoloration. Additionally, cigarette odor can settle into dentures over time.
Fixed Dentures or Removable Dentures?
The answer to this question depends on two parameters: the condition of the patient’s bone and their financial situation. If there are no issues with both, fixed dentures are much more advantageous. Ball attachment dentures are the best alternative to removable prostheses.
Why Doesn't My Denture Stay in My Mouth?
If dentures do not fit perfectly with the mouth, they may move around or come out easily. The first step should be to visit a dentist to ensure proper fit. If you cannot visit a dentist, denture adhesives can be a good alternative solution.
I Accidentally Swallowed My Denture, Is it a Problem?
If the denture is not too large and does not contain metal hooks, it is unlikely to cause serious issues and will pass through with the stool. However, it’s important to ensure it hasn’t gone into the lungs. Visiting a general practitioner and getting a chest X-ray might be wise. If the denture you swallowed is large, it’s essential to consult a doctor.
Can a Broken Denture be Repaired?
Broken dentures can be repaired. It is wise to use additional metal supports and more acrylic in the broken area for repairs.

Whether considering dentures for cosmetic reasons or dental health, this informative piece underscores the benefits and considerations associated with choosing dentures in Antalya.
Who Does Dentures
Dentures are dental prosthetics designed to replace missing teeth, and a wide range of dental professionals are qualified to provide this essential service. Typically, dental specialists, such as prosthodontists, general dentists, and oral surgeons, play a significant role in fabricating and fitting dentures. Each professional brings unique expertise, ensuring that patients receive the most appropriate treatment tailored to their specific needs.
Common Candidates for Dentures
Individuals with multiple missing teeth
Patients who have experienced tooth decay or gum disease
Those who have suffered from traumatic dental injuries
Individuals seeking cosmetic enhancement for their smile
Patients with difficulty chewing or speaking due to tooth loss
Individuals seeking a budget-friendly solution for tooth replacement
Choosing to get dentures is a significant decision, often guided by advice from a dental professional. Consultation is key—during these visits, the dental expert will evaluate the oral condition, discuss various types of dentures, and determine the best type for each patient. It is vital to consider not just the aesthetic aspect but also functional capabilities, comfort, and overall oral health.
In summary, if you are experiencing significant dental issues or have lost multiple teeth, seeking the assistance of a qualified dentist for dentures is a step towards improved oral function and quality of life. Your dental provider will guide you through the process, ensuring optimal results for your new smile.
Ultimately, the goal is to restore both function and appearance, allowing patients to reclaim their confidence.
Will Dentures Prevent Bone Loss
Bone loss is a significant concern for individuals who have lost teeth. After tooth loss, the jawbone can begin to deteriorate due to the lack of stimulation it receives from tooth roots. This can lead to various complications, such as changes in facial structure and difficulties in chewing. A common question arises: can dentures help mitigate this bone loss? Understanding the relationship between dentures and bone health is essential for making informed decisions about dental care.
Understanding Bone Loss is crucial when considering the implications of tooth loss. When teeth are missing, the jawbone no longer receives the necessary stimulation to maintain its density and shape. This process, known as resorption, leads to a gradual decline in bone mass. Patients may experience not only aesthetic changes but also functional issues, making it vital to address bone preservation after tooth loss.
The Role of Dentures
Dentures serve as a prosthetic solution for missing teeth, but their ability to prevent bone loss is limited. While they can restore function and aesthetics, they do not replace the root structure of natural teeth, which is critical for bone maintenance. Nonetheless, wearing dentures may provide other benefits, such as improving chewing efficiency and boosting confidence, which can positively affect overall oral health. Regular follow-ups with dental professionals are essential to monitor any changes in the jawbone.
Steps to Minimize Bone Loss with Dentures
Ensure a proper fit by visiting a qualified dentist regularly.
Consider dental implants as an alternative or adjunct to dentures for better support.
Maintain a balanced diet rich in calcium and vitamin D to support bone health.
Engage in jawbone stimulation exercises as advised by your dental care provider.
Replace old or ill-fitting dentures promptly to reduce pressure on the jawbone.
Schedule regular dental check-ups to monitor bone health and denture fit.
Discuss the potential use of bone grafting with your dentist if significant bone loss occurs.
By taking proactive measures, patients wearing dentures can better protect their bone health and reduce potential complications. Ultimately, consulting with dental professionals is vital for tailored advice on maintaining oral and bone health while using dentures.
Does Dentures Affect Taste
The introduction of dentures can significantly impact various aspects of daily life, one of which is the sense of taste. Many individuals transitioning to false teeth may initially notice changes in how they perceive flavors. This shift can be attributed to several factors, including how the dentures interact with the mouth and the residual effects on taste buds. Understanding these changes is crucial for those adapting to their new dental appliances.
Among the most common concerns for denture users is how taste sensation can be altered. Dentures create a layer between the tongue and the palate, which can dull certain flavors. Additionally, the materials used in dentures may not only affect taste perception but also the overall comfort of wearing them. Over time, many users report adjustments in their taste preferences, which can be a normal part of the adaptation process.
Factors Influencing Taste with Dentures
The type of material used for the false teeth
The fit and stability of the dentures
Presence of any oral sores or irritations
The individual’s natural sensitivity to taste
The removal of natural teeth affecting taste receptors
Adaptation period for the brain to recalibrate taste perception
Realizing that adaptations will occur can promote a more positive experience for those adjusting to wearing dentures. Over time, the body typically learns to adapt to the presence of false teeth, and many users regain their enjoyment of food and flavor. Regular check-ups with a dental professional can also enhance taste satisfaction by ensuring that dentures are well-fitted and comfortable.
Temporary Adjustments
Initially, users may experience a decrease in the intensity of flavors due to the temporary adjustments required when wearing false teeth. The adaptation involves not just the physical changes but psychological factors as well, where subjective perception of taste can shift. The mind truly plays a significant role in our sensory experiences. Encouragingly, this phase is often temporary, and individuals report an improvement in their taste experience as they become accustomed to their dentures.
Long-term Adaptations
For many, long-term adaptations to dentures lead to a more stable perception of taste. As both the mouth and the brain adjust, denture wearers frequently regain their ability to enjoy foods they once loved. While some changes in preferences might linger, many find that rich and complex flavors return. It is essential to maintain open communication with dental care providers to support this adjustment and ensure that any concerns are promptly addressed.
Will Dentures Change My Face
The introduction of dentures into your dental routine can lead to significant changes in your facial structure and overall appearance. It is essential to understand these potential alterations to set proper expectations post-insertion. Dentures can impact both aesthetics and function, giving you a renewed sense of confidence. However, the extent to which dentures might change your face can depend on various factors, including the type of dentures used and your individual anatomy.
When immediate changes occur, many patients might notice a shift in their facial features. Initially, the most visible aspect is the filling in of certain areas of the face that may have sagged due to tooth loss. This is a crucial factor since the absence of teeth can lead to a loss of support for the facial muscles. Additionally, patients may experience slight adjustments in their overall facial symmetry due to the new structure provided by the dentures.

Short-term

Understanding the potential outcomes can be quite beneficial. Many people wonder about the specific ways their face might transform with the use of false teeth. Here are some changes often associated with wearing dentures:
Potential Facial Changes with Dentures
Enhanced facial volume: Dentures can restore natural facial contours lost due to late-stage tooth loss.
Improved symmetry: Replacing missing teeth can lead to more balanced features.
Defined jawline: Properly fitting dentures can help maintain a defined jawline.
Elevation of sagging skin: The presence of dentures provides support to skin areas around the mouth.
Restored smile: A complete set of teeth can dramatically improve your smile's appearance.
Confidence boost: As facial aesthetics improve, many individuals feel a surge in self-confidence.
Altered lip position: Dentures may change the way your lips sit when relaxed or during speech.
Immediate Effects Post-Insertion
Right after receiving dentures, it is common to experience some discomfort or difficulty speaking and eating as your mouth adjusts to the new prosthetics. These immediate effects can manifest as swelling or sensitivity in the gums, requiring a short adjustment period. It's essential to have realistic expectations during this time, as your facial appearance may change slightly as the surrounding tissues adapt to the dentist-provided false teeth.
Long-term Aesthetic Changes
Over time, the changes that dentures bring can lead to more long-lasting transformations. As natural support is restored to the face, deeper creases and sagging that often develop without teeth may diminish. Although slight adjustments to your facial structure may still occur, the results can be remarkably positive for your looks. Regular visits to your dental professional can help ensure your dentures fit correctly, maintaining the aesthetic benefits and prolonging their life.

In Turkey, specifically in Antalya, prices for dentures are generally more affordable compared to many Western countries, making it a popular destination for dental tourism. Patients seeking more budget-friendly options for false teeth often find that they can receive high-quality dental care without breaking the bank.
